The Invisible Man (2020) Review
First, let’s start with how excited I am to see this film. Luckily, I got to catch it in an advanced preview. And I will say this, the excitement, counting the days, posts on social media, all paid off.
This film definitely scares you. It is not just a jump or a loud sound, it is something psychological. From the first opening shot, you’re immediately put inside the head of Elizabeth Moss’s character Cecilia. She is trapped in an abusive relationship and cannot get out of it. The whole opening scene makes you uncomfortable as we see Cecilia trying to make her escape. Such tension remains throughout the film.
Another thing that makes this film successful is its writing. The story moves at a fast pace that doesn’t seem quick. 2hr runtime is achieved. There is definitely more than one ‘WTF’ moment in this film to keep you on the edge of your seat.
The score and sound design definitely put you in Cecilia’s shoes as you struggle with her to be a truly invisible man. The camera work is excellent, I mean do we really doubt the director who brought us the upgrade? The action sequence definitely sounds thrilling and the way it is shot makes you feel like you are living it.
In my book, Elizabeth Moss can do no wrong. His performance here is definitely something remarkable. From his hysterically frightened to fighting back, Moss sells him. He makes us root for him. Oliver Jackson Cohen, who plays the role of her abusive husband, has a small but genuinely important role and Boy O Boy is that scary. The rest of the supporting cast are also really good. Overall, this is Moss’s film and she plays it with ease.
This year (so far) there have not been many horror films that really got me worried or forced me to jump. So I am happy that this film was successful in doing both. Leah Whannell is an amazing horror writer / director and proves that she can still give us a solid entertaining flick.
There are few solid moments of blood, so goats can be joyful.
I thought about it a lot and I really can’t think of anything that doesn’t work. Some of you may complain about the camera’s work and how it focuses on the actor’s faces more than the action but works for me. I think the drama must be sold.
All this and this was a terrible film, mixing the monster with a really relevant story made the universal monster scary. I would give this film a 9/10.
