Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) Review
If Rise originally quoted the 1968 film and a new take on the Plains of the Apes series, Don manages to set things right in motion, and is far superior to his predecessor.
The story is set 10 years after an epidemic apocalypse. A familiar premise for the Apocop films, to be sure, but it is not the zombies that survivors have to face. It is a highly organized tribe of Caesar. The story reminds me once again of almost an “animal farm”, in which the apes treat humans fairly, because, as Caesar says, the apes are similar to humans, though he did not anticipate.
Therefore Caesar, Koba, and many others behave very humanely, each of whom has given his inspiration for his actions. I like how Rocket’s role evolved after what was in “Rise”. Similarly human characters are portrayed without distinguishing between good or evil, but more likely between the protagonist and the antagonist. Dreyfus’ inspirations are quite clear.
Even more surprising is that half of the characters appear as computer generated imagery. Fotorialism is excellently convincing, and Mo-Cap actors (with Serkis on the lead) can convey their talents as well as other actors through this technique.
Usually, I really appreciated the photography in this film. Some shots where outstanding, and where there are some solo scenes (which, however, did not last a minute of uncut footage or more). Even if you can see a lot on screen in CG, it is a remarkable achievement.
The only weak score was the score. When I listen to a Giochino score I can clearly recognize that his “emotional scene” theme is in almost every film or TV show he created since Lost, partly due to possibly doing a huge amount of work. reason.
It is one of the best post-epic films of the decade. I sincerely hope that the conclusion of this first trilogy is as good as the film, if not better.
